I love Spring. For a few weeks (or less) out of the year, these mighty trees burst forth with inflorescences in all sorts of shapes, sizes, smells and colors! Just yesterday I was reminded how cool the inflorescence of our native Sassafras albidum looks. It’s like a little green sparkler going off! Then, about a week later, it’s wrapped up and the tree is leafing out. It’s truly a time to stop and look around and appreciate the display that’s being put on.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the greenhouse the last few weeks, sowing seeds from the plans we drew up over the winter. Winter sown native seeds have all grown their first set of true leaves, but have a ways to go before I separate and pot them up. Heat-loving veggies like tomatoes and luffa and watermelon are indoors right now because of a late cold-snap, but soon everything will be filling out and the garden will start to come alive with the buzz of pollinators.
